Decomposing definiteness: Evidence from Chuj

چکیده

Abstract This article explores the realization of definiteness in Chuj, an underdocumented Mayan language. I show that Chuj provides support for recent theories distinguish between weak and strong definite descriptions (e.g., Schwarz 2009, 2013; Arkoh Matthewson Hanink 2018; Jenks 2018). A set morphemes called “noun classifiers” contribute a uniqueness presupposition, composing directly with nominals to form definites. To definites, two pieces are required: (i) noun classifier, which again contributes (ii) extra morphology anaphoricity presupposition. definites thus provide explicit evidence decompositional account as also advocated 2018. then extend this analysis third person pronouns, realized bare classifiers, propose come guises depending on their use. On one hand, based previous work (Postal 1966, Cooper 1979, Heim 1990), argue classifier pronouns can sometimes be E-type pronouns: determiners combine covert index-introducing predicate. In such cases, represent description. other argue, diagnostics established Bi 2019, arise result NP ellipsis (Elbourne 2001, 2005). reflect

Definiteness, Gender, and Hybrids: Evidence from Norwegian Dialects

In some Norwegian dialects, such as older Oslo dialect, the noun mamma ‘mother’ unexpectedly appears to be masculine. The Nordreisa dialect (Northern Norwegian) goes one step further. The word looks like it is masculine, but only in the definite form. This is an unusual “split” because gender mixture is normally based on number, not definiteness (but we find some few corroborative examples in o...

Decomposing socioeconomic inequalities in childhood obesity: evidence from Ireland.

The objective of this paper is to quantify and decompose the socioeconomic gradient in childhood obesity in the Republic of Ireland. The analysis is performed using data from the first wave of the Growing Up in Ireland survey, a nationally representative survey of 8568 nine-year-old children conducted in 2007 and 2008. We estimate concentration indices to quantify the extent of the socioeconomi...

Iterating Definiteness

A central concept in the study of vagueness is the concept of a borderline case. This concept has its most basic application when we are faced with a question of the form ‘Is x F?’, but are unwilling to answer ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ for a certain distinctive kind of reason. Wanting to be co-operative, we need to say something; by saying ‘It’s a borderline case’, we excuse our failure to give a straightf...

Definiteness and Indefiniteness *

The prototypes of definiteness and indefiniteness in English are the definite article the and the indefinite article a/an, and singular noun phrases (NPs) determined by them. That being the case it is not to be predicted that the concepts, whatever their content, will extend satisfactorily to other determiners or NP types. However it has become standard to extend these notions. Of the two categ...

Extending Positive Definiteness

The main result of this paper gives criteria for extendibility of mappings defined on symmetric subsets of ∗-semigroups to positive definite ones. By specifying the mappings in question we obtain new solutions of relevant issues in harmonic analysis concerning truncations of some important multivariate moment problems, like complex, two-sided complex and multidimensional trigonometric moment pr...
